Becky & Migration brief

Rough sketches of scarf design:
These designs are inspired by the symbols that I had researched and the concept of the scarf being from on end to another. The designs are inspired by Typescarf, in the boldness and placement of the content.

Collaboration with Becky:

I decided it would be appropriate to collaborate with someone who works with fabric. Becky does textile design and often works with shapes and colour, being very appropriate for the brief.

When talking to her about what I planned to do for this project, she offered to design symbols that could be used for the design. She based these from the research and rough sketches I did.

We also talked about the making of the scarf. She explained that it would take a very long time to create a knitted scarf similar to Typescarf. Instead it would be better if we printed it. She isn't available in the time frame we have to screen print onto fabric, which was our original intentions, however we both agreed it would be effective if the design was digitally printed.

We discussed the material, size and cost, and decided that it would make sense to create a large square scarf, almost like a bandana but larger, so that it is easy to print and cost effective. We also agreed this would make sense for its purpose as a large square material can be used for a lot more than just a scarf. E.g. it could be used for carrying things, clothing, to sit on, to wrap things, as decoration, a blanket, etc.

We also discussed the idea for having some form of online platform which people can document where they have been with the scarf and their story on why they are migrating. We both agreed that an instagram would be most effective as more people would view it rather than a website which is harder to find. I also suggested we could design a face filter so that those who don't have the scarf can still take part in sharing their stories.

Her work:

I had asked her to design the symbols for the scarf so that they look quite organic and homemade, communicating a personal, close to home visual. I thought this would effective for its use as those who would be wearing the scarf would likely feel quite far from home, so this would almost give them a burst of comfort and hope.

She did this by cutting up shapes from paper and scanning them in, which worked really well in response to my request.

Designs using Becky's work:

Instagram content designs.
Post to explain what the scarf and brand is all about.
Post that is a template for people to put their stories and an image of them with the scarf.

Quote to inspire and promote migration, and to justify its happening.
Another template to tell peoples stories.

Beckys thoughts on the designs:

Becky's own design:
Becky created her own design for the scarf which is more repetitive  giving the scarf more of a pattern look.

The face filter:
I created the face filter using the program Spark AR, which allows you to create a face filter and upload it to Instagram for the public to use. This was effective as it communicated the branding that I made for Better Future and creates a fun way for people to engage in the concept. I was able to make the butterflies and water move up and down, as well as add a location and date that adapts for the users location and date they are using the filter.

Crit:
During the crit I had positive feedback on the filter that it is a good way for others to share their stories. However, they suggested that a hashtag should be promoted on the filter so that it can be shared to one place as a collection. One idea was that a graphic of the scarf could be made so it looked as though they were wearing it. However I don't think this would be effective as there is a high risk the graphic may look out of place on the person.
Showing them the designs we created for the scarf, everyone seemed to like the repetitive look of Becky's design as it looks pattern like; appropriate for a scarf. However, they said it would look better with the swirl migration symbol in the centre instead of the circle, and something to fill the space around the middle.
