Kerning and Ligtures

kerning - the spacing between letters within word.
works in pairs. e.g. Av would usually be spaced apart without kerning.
to make visually balanced or, e.g. branding, to create a visual personality or tone of voice for brand
high end us a lot of positive kerning. expensive, less of it, more space.

Task 1
  1. Lifestyle - positive (sleek)
  2. Condom manufacture - small gap (trustworthy small gap of uncertainty)
  3. Insurance company - spaced out a bit more (plain, boring, simple)
  4. Indie food fest - parallel lines, averagely sized gap, e fits inside (playful but comfortable)
  5. Nursery - descending, e fits inside again (playful)

[Apply knowledge learnt about kerning for construction of logo to type]

Ligatures - connected letter. baskerville can still see origin of the e and t inside the glyph to make ‘and’.

Task 2

Create ligature from contemporary acronym, phrase or term. Think about context, how it is said, which letter is stressed the most, if you can use any punctuation in it...

Bodoni
Futura

We tried using Bodoni font to bring a playful element to the ligature, however using Futura has a more effective result as the san serif typeface appears modern, which will be more appealing to kids, and the weights are all the same, making the glyph flow.
