Colour management
Using spot colour will ensure the colour to be true to how it looks on the screen when printed.

Printing and alignment
  • Lithography - Uses a plate per colour (CMYK). High quality but expensive. Will be a high print run.
  • Digital print - inkjet/laser. Has a fast turn around, fast set up, one off jobs and flexible. However can be lower quality, can have cracking in folds, and will be more expensive for higher quantity print runs.
  • Letterpress - relief printing, raised surface which is inked.
  • Screen printing - low print runs, good for one offs and colours, no cracking.
  • Risograph - high print run, low set up costs, little environmental impact, not available to you because not in the uni.

Binding
  • Spiral binding
  • Wiro binding
  • Singer stitch
  • Elastic band
  • Case bound
  • Perfect bound
  • Japanese stab stitch
  • Coptic stitch
  • Pamphlet stitch
  • Saddle stitch
  • Binding rings
  • Belly band
  • Bolt bind
  • Exposed spine

Gatefold - a folded sheet of four panels.
Throw out - A folded sheet bound into a publication that opens one side only.
Tip ins/ons - adding odd sizes into a publication.

Finishing
  • Foil blocking - coloured foil pressed into stock using a foil stamp.
  • Embossing/debossing - raised/indented surface.
  • Die, laser and kiss cutting - a design cut out of the surface using a metal die or laser. Kiss doesn't cut all the way through.
  • Duplexing - different stocks together to make one page with different textures on each side.
  • Laminate - Plastic coating with liquid resistant surface.
  • Varnish - A colourless coating, applied the same as a spot colour.
  • Trimming guillotining.
