Book production notes

Books

  • Question what a book is.
  • All books start with a question.
What is my question?
  • Find ways to make your book stand out.
  • Every decision should communicate something about the book.
  • Production methods: stock, print method, binding method, mock ups / experiments (evaluate), finishes, commercial considerations vs. access to resources, Preparing documents to be sent to print - any considerations in regards to print methods (digital or offset), Understanding colour/ink and related standards and systems, (CMYK, Pantone, etc.), Identifying spot colour, spot varnish, die cut, emboss, and other finishes in digital art work ready for print, What printers will be expecting - marks, bleeds, etc.
  • Based on the concept of the book, rules should be identified and applied to the design.
What are my rules?
  • Could general rules of book making be broken?

  • Experiment then refine.
  • Consider audience.

Looking at Star Probe
Star Probe is a fictional story of life from another planet visiting earth, and the decisions to be made from it.

Properties/conventions of the book:
  • Perfect bound
  • Laminate paper cover
  • Thin paper
  • 218 pages
  • Cover is printed in colour, inside is printed in black and white
  • Smaller than conventional fictional books
  • Type is futuristic looking on outside, serif small type on inside for readability.

How the design of the book could communicate this more effectively:
  • Cover could be printed onto silver paper for futuristic look.
  • Book could be larger in size, referencing the scale of space. However this could compromise the ease of its size when reading in different places.
  • Could be more of the illustration featured on the front inside as this will bring more life to the book and the readers experience.
